⇒ 의역 : 비 때문에 우리는 소풍을 못 갔다.

 

▶ prevent는 타동사(vt)로 『막다, 방해하다, 못 하게 하다』의 의미인데 주어가 주로 사물이기 때문에 적당한 의역이 필요합니다.

▶ prevent와 같은 뜻으로 rule out이 있습니다.

 

 

  The snowstorm prevented our weekly meeting.

= The snowstorm ruled out our weekly meeting.

⇒ 직역 : 눈보라가 우리의 매주 있는 모임을 막았다[방해했다].

⇒ 의역 : 눈보라 때문에 우리는 매주 있는 모임을 갖지 못했다.

▶ going out처럼 동명사가 목적어로 따라오기도 하는데... 아래의 예문을 잘 보세요.

⇒ 직역 : 비가 '나를' 나가는 것으로부터[나가는 것을] 막았다[방해했다].

⇒ 의역 : 비 때문에 '나는' 나가지 못했다.

 

▶ prevent나 rule out 뒤에 목적어(⇒ me)가 따라왔지만 의미상의 주어(⇒ 나는) 역할을 합니다.

▶ 의미상의 주어로 사용될 목적어가 따라올 때 prevent 뒤에는 전치사 from이 수반되는 것이 rule out과 다릅니다. 잘 기억하세요.

 

 

  Business prevented me from going.

= Business ruled out me going.

⇒ 의역 : 일 때문에 나는 못 갔다.

 

 

  The fact that she was married prevented me from asking her out.

= The fact that she was married ruled out me asking her out.

⇒ 의역 : 그녀가 기혼자였기 때문에 난 그녀에게 데이트 신청을 못했다.

 

▶ The fact that S(주어) + V(동사) : that절은 The fact라는 명사를 수식하는 형용사절이 되고 The fact that S + V 전체를 놓고 보면 '~라는 사실'이 되므로 The fact that S + V는 명사절이 됩니다.
