During dinner, Pheakdey talked about Sreyya, his elder sister, who was working for a beauty salon as a hairdresser, and he emphasized that his sister had gotten the highest salary in Cambodia. According to what he said, ordinary hairdressers got paid only $50 a month, but her make-up paid $150 a month. (Everything he said was a pack of lies.)

 

저녁을 드는 중에, 페크데이가 미용실에서 미용사로 일하는 그의 누나 스레이야에 대해서 말했는데, 그의 누나가 캄보디아에서 가장 높은 봉급을 받는다는 걸 강조했다. 그의 말에 의하면, 보통 미용사들은 월 50불의 봉급을 받는데 페크데이 누나는 화장기술로 월 150불을 받는다고 했다. (그가 말한 모든 것이 새빨간 거짓말투성이였다.)

 

 

After dinner, he asked me to Sreyya's home which is a 20 minutes' walk from the outdoor restaurant. It's only twenty minutes away on foot from the Capitol Guest House, but the atmosphere was quite different. Not a shadow of a foreigner was to be seen, there wasn't a convenient store that can be easily found anywhere; it's little better than a slum. The apartment where she lived was pretty old and messy as I expected. Pheakdey said to me that the rent of it was $100 a month, but it wasn't true. (Everything he said was a pack of lies.)

 

저녁을 들고 나서, 녀석이 노천식당에서 도보로 20분 거리에 있는 스레이야의 집으로 날 초대했다. 카피톨 게스트 하우스에서 도보로 불과 20분 떨어진 곳인데 분위기가 사뭇 달랐다. 외국인이라곤 그림자도 찾아볼 수 없었고, 그 흔한 편의점 하나 없는 것이 빈민가와 다를 바 없었다. 그녀가 살고 있던 아파트는 예상했던 대로 아주 낡고 지저분했다. 집세가 월 100불이라고 페크데이가 내게 말했지만, 사실이 아니었다. (그가 말한 모든 것이 새빨간 거짓말투성이였다.)
