<태국> 치앙마이, 다시 찾은 VIP House, 그러나

 

When I first stayed here at the VIP House last April, more than 50% of the rooms were unoccupied. The rents weren't very expensive considering the sizes of the rooms and facilities, but they had no other choice but to endure the loss of the slack season of long standing.

 

작년 4월에 이곳에 처음 투숙했을 때는 반 이상의 방이 비어 있었다. 방의 크기나 시설보다 방값이 그리 비싸지는 않았지만, 장기간에 걸친 비수기의 손해를 감수해야 했다.

 

The basic monthly rent was 6,000 Baht including a TV, a medium-size refrigerator and Wi-Fi, 5,500 Baht excluding TV, and 5,300 Baht with a small-size refrigerator. Since the room was good enough to stay for long and the manager did the agreeable, I just checked in without even thinking of looking for another place. But I began to feel stressed out since the internet had been disconnected for several hours every day.

 

TV와 냉장고, 무선인터넷까지 포함해서 기본 월세가 6,000바트였고, TV가 없는 방은 5,500바트, 소형냉장고가 있는 방은 5,300바트였다. 장기체류하기에 충분한 방이었고 매니저도 상냥하게 대했으므로 다른 곳을 둘러볼 생각도 하지 않고 바로 투숙했다. 그러나 인터넷이 매일 몇 시간씩 끊어져서 심한 스트레스를 받기 시작했다.

 

A week after I checked in, the manager apologized to me for the internet connection over again and said that the rent could be refunded if I wanted. She suggested that I should move into another guest house having no problems with the internet connection. Her kindhearted consideration made me put up with the inconvenience and stay till I left for Laos, and I was waiting to be reconnected working out or studying when my computer was disconnected on the internet.

 

체크인한지 일주일 만에 매니저가 인터넷 문제에 대해 거듭 사과하고 내가 원하면 환급을 해줄 터이니 인터넷 연결이 좋은 숙소로 옮기는 것이 낫겠다고 제안했다. 그녀의 따뜻한 배려에 불편함을 감수하기로 작정하고 라오스로 떠날 때까지 숙소를 옮기지 않았고, 인터넷 접속이 원활하지 않을 때는 운동을 하거나 공부를 하면서 연결되기를 기다렸다.

 

Four months after I came back from Cambodia, I put up at the VIP House again (2nd visit), and after coming back to Chiang Mai from Korea, I only stayed at the VIP House (3rd visit). And I recommended the VIP House to all the people I met.

 

넉 달 후 캄보디아에서 돌아온 후에도 VIP House에 묵었고 (두 번째), 한국에서 치앙마이로 돌아온 후에도 오직 VIP House에만 투숙했고 (세 번째), 내가 만난 모든 사람에게 VIP House를 추천했다.

 

Since I was seated in a broken seat on the night bus to Chiang Mai from Bangkok this time, I had to stay awake all the way to my destination. on the 27th of January, after checking in at the VIP House (4th visit), I felt quite exhausted, but I had to access the internet before going to sleep since I was running out of my traveling expenses. But I couldn't get my internet connection till the twilight came on, so I was able to transfer some money to my debit card in an internet cafe and withdraw after all.

 

이번에는 방콕에서 치앙마이로 향하는 야간버스의 내 좌석이 고장이 난 것이어서 한숨 못 자고 목적지에 도착했다. 1월 27일, VIP House에 체크인하고 나서 (네 번째), 몹시 피곤했지만, 여비가 바닥나서 잠을 청하기 전에 서둘러 인터넷 접속을 해야 했다. 그러나 땅거미가 질 때까지 인터넷 접속이 되지 않았고, 결국 PC방에 가서 계좌이체하고 현금을 인출할 수 있었다.

 

I mentioned to the mother of the manager that I had some problems with the internet connection that morning, but she didn't even respond. That night when I mentioned to her that the internet connection wasn't working again, she said at once, "Because your laptop is not good. Mine is much better than yours. So, I don't have any problems with the internet connection!" (She doesn't even know what kind of laptop I have.)

 

그날 아침 매니저 어머니한테 인터넷 연결이 잘 안 된다고 말했지만, 대꾸조차 없었다. 저녁에 다시 인터넷 연결 상태가 좋지 않다고 말하자, 대뜸 하는 말이 "노트북이 좋지 않은 것이니 그렇지. 내 노트북은 네 것보다 좋아서 전혀 문제가 없거든!" (그녀는 내가 어떤 노트북을 소유하고 있는지조차 모른다.)

 

I requested that they should check if the Wi-Fi was working properly, but she said, "You know Wi-Fi means Wireless Fidelity. You are really ignorant in the internet!" She snapped at me like that and left her seat.

 

무선인터넷이 제대로 되는지 점검해달라고 다시 물었으나 그녀가 하는 말이 "Wi-Fi란 무선인터넷을 의미하는 거다. 인터넷이 뭔지도 모르는 문외한이!" 그렇게 내게 쏘아붙이고는 자리를 떴다.

 

Gosh, I can even fix the computers that repairmen cannot, but she was explaining what Wi-Fi meant. I was dumb with amazement to hear an old Thai lady over 60 explain the internet to a Korean from the world's most wired country.

 

허허, 컴퓨터라면 수리기사도 해결하지 못하는 문제를 고치는 내게 Wi-Fi의 의미를 설명하다니. 육십이 넘은 태국인 노인네가 인터넷 최강국에서 온 한국인에게 인터넷을 설명하다니 기가 막혔다.

 

That was still endurable, but soon what the manager (her daughter) said aroused my anger. "Please don't make any trouble with your laptop. My mom is so mad at you. If she is mad, she cannot control herself. If you don't like the internet connection, why don't you move to another house?"

 

그래도 거기까지는 참을 수 있었는데 곧 (그녀의 딸인) 매니저가 날 분노케 했다. "제발 노트북 가지고 문제 좀 일으키지 마. 내 어머니가 당신한테 화가 단단히 나셨어. 어머니가 화가 나시면 통제 불능이거든. 인터넷이 마음에 안 들면 다른 숙소 알아보던가!"

 

The moment she said that way, I could not believe my ears since she had shown me every kindness for such a long time. I perceived a considerable change in her attitude. That's because her house was full of guests? Or, she finally showed her hidden true colors? This time I noticed that the guests staying at the VIP House were not VIPs but the landladies.

 

순간 내 귀를 의심하지 않을 수 없었다. 그렇게 오래도록 친절을 다해왔던 그녀였기에……. 그녀의 태도가 상당히 변했음을 깨달았다. 손님이 넘쳐나자 달라진 것일까? 혹은, 드디어 숨겨둔 본색을 드러낸 것일까? VIP House의 손님이 VIP가 아닌 주인이 VIP였음을 이번에 알게 되었다.
